High Sensitivity comes with amazing qualities, gifts, and abilities that are desperately needed in the world today. Those of use with this trait are often extremely intelligent, creative, innovative, artistic, highly intuitive, self-aware, empathic, and sensitive to the pain of others. We often have deep and complex inner lives, feel connected to nature and animals, and are capable of deep intimacy in relationships.
Unfortunately, most sensitives begin searching for answers not because of our gifts, but because of the pain that results from trying to live in a world that has not evolved to meet our needs. Many HSP’s (Highly Sensitive People) feel misunderstood by others or like we don’t belong. Some of us even worry that we might be “crazy” or flawed in some way.
The good news is that you aren’t crazy and you’re not alone. High Sensitivity is a genetic trait first identified by Dr. Elaine Aron. According to Dr. Aron, about 15-20% of the population is Highly Sensitive and experiences the world as uncomfortably intense and overwhelming. Feelings of vulnerability, fatigue, isolation, and disconnection are common to HSP’s who haven’t yet learned the skills to care for our sensitive nervous systems. We may also be quite empathetic and have a tendency to “take on” the emotions and physical symptoms of others, which can lead to chronic illness, anxiety, depression, and addictive behaviors.
It’s important to remember that although the challenges of your sensitivity may feel overwhelming right now, once you understand and learn to care for your unique needs, the amazing gifts of your sensitivity will become clear and available to you and those around you.
